Micropayment Infrastructure for the Agentic Economy

Why machine-speed spending needs explicit authority, payment controls, and settlement telemetry.

Micropayments are only safe when payment authority travels with the transaction. If autonomous systems can initiate spend without budget context, merchant checks, or interruption paths, settlement becomes faster than control.

The broker model

A spend broker sits between agent intent and actual payment execution. It decides whether a payment request has:

  1. the right authority,
  2. the right budget,
  3. the right destination,
  4. and the right settlement conditions.

That decision has to happen inline, not after the ledger has already moved funds.

Controls that matter

The basic stack includes authorization rules, high-value approval hooks, counterparty screening, telemetry for settlement outcomes, and immediate suspension controls for anomalous spending patterns.

From payments to governance

The point is not just to move money faster. It is to make machine-speed payments legible enough that finance, risk, and oversight teams can still explain who was allowed to spend, under which limits, and how the system reacted when conditions changed.
